BD Medical Manufacturing Clean Room
Description:
Manufacturing Clean Room 10 for BD Medical is a 19,000 SF remodel which adding high tech manufacturing component to the existing facility in Sandy, Utah.
Axis employed an innovative walkable ceiling system in the design. The ceiling allows maintenance personnel to have access to every square foot of space above the entire clean room, replacing the catwalk
system employed elsewhere in the plant. This wall-to-wall ceiling eliminates the requirements for fall protection, minimizing the time required for periodic maintenance to the ductwork and electrical bus
ducts throughout the area. And not only was this system effective - it also reduced the cost of
the structural steel required for a typical cat walk by approximately $50,000. In addition, the system reduced the overall structural depth by approximately 30 inches. This space savings is critical in the
mezzanine area.
The remainder of the facility was required to be up and running during the entire process. This posed a problem with respect to the vibration-sensitive equipment in the adjacent Data Center - the nerve center for
the entire plant. Axis indicated several techniques in the construction documents to mitigate this risk, including the digging of an isolation trench around the Data center to minimize the transmission of vibration through the soil. There were also stringent requirements in place to avoid the penetration of moisture or dust into the facility as well as means to mitigate the transmission of construction noise.
