BD Medical Clean Room 10

BD CR Info
BD MedicalClean Room 10Client: BD MedicalSize: 19,000 SFCost: $6,000,000Completed: Fall 2009Currently under design, Clean Room 10 for BD Medical in Sandy Utah is a high tech manufacturing facility. Axis employed an innovative walkable ceiling system in the design. The ceiling allows maintenance personnel to have access to every square foot of space above the entire clean room, replacing the catwalk system employed elsewhere in the plant. This wall-to-wall ceiling eliminates the requirements for fall protection, minimizing the time required for periodic maintenance to the ductwork and electrical bus ducts throughout the area. And not only was this system effective - it also reduced the cost of the structural steel required for a typical cat walk by approximately $50,000. In addition, the system reduced the overall structural depth by approximately 30 inches. This space savings is critical in the mezzanine area. The remainder of the facility was required to be up and running during the entire process. This posed a problem with respect to the vibration-sensitive equipment in the adjacent Data Center - the nerve center for the entire plant. Axis indicated several techniques in the construction documents to mitigate this risk, including the digging of an isolation trench around the Data center to minimize the transmission of vibration through the soil. There were also stringent requirements in place to avoid the penetration of moisture or dust into the facility, as well as means to mitigate the transmission of construction noise.

Saline Info
Fresenius Medical CareSaline Manufacturing FacilityOgden, UtahClient: Fresenius Medical CareSize: 71,000 SFCost: $40,000,000Completed: Fall 2006The Saline Manufacturing portion of Fresenius houses a multi-phase process combining full automation with LCD touch screen controls and lean manufacturing principles. Sterile manufacturing for peritoneal dialysis drugs and saline fluid requires multiple classes of clean rooms (1,000 to 100,000). The main components are as follow:Solution formulation requires class 10,000 clean rooms to house its 4 DCI 36000 liter single shell vertical storage systems and agitator mix tanks.A 16,000 SF class 10,000 clean room is required for the filling area, with a class 1,000 portion over the manufacturing equipment in the Fill Rooms. Each of the 4,800 SF Fill Rooms utilize sterile laminar flow technology to provide the utmost protection for the production of the 1 and 5 liter saline bags. This area also includes sterile packaging, and inspection in class 100,000.The third element is sterilization, which requires 4 steam-sterilization autoclave systems. This portion is 24,000 SF, including loading, sterilizing, packaging, staging, and clean warehouse.

As the major component of their dialysis filtration system, these fibers are produced in an ISO class 8 clean room environment. With an in-depth understanding of the manufacturing techniques and solid experience in clean room design, Axis was able to provide an expansion that streamlined the process and increased productivity.

Fresenius Medical CareMaster PlanOgden, UtahClient: Fresenius Medical CareSize: 85,000 SFCost: $20,000,000Completed: Fall 2009The Fresenius Master Plan is an ongoing process, requiring continuous refinement by Axis Architects. Alan Turner has been working on this evolving plan for the past 15 years. The 2008 Master Plan will transform 85,000 SF of existing warehouse space within the plant into new manufacturing components, greatly increasing the production capacity. The implementation of lean manufacturing concepts as well as refinement of adjacent manufacturing processes was a priority in the 2008 version of the plan.

BD Medical Stopcock Molding FacilitySandy, UtahClient: BD MedicalSize: 12,070 SFCost: $3,000,000Completed: March 2010The Stopcock Molding Facility for BD Medical will greatly increase the productivity of the overall plant, allowing for the production of integral medical device components. As a medical manufacturing zone, this portion of the plant requires a class 100,000 SF clean room for two-thirds of the 12,070 SF remodel area. In addition to the infiltration limits, Axis Architects is responsible for the coordination of all the utilities and services which feed the injection molding presses: power (120V, 240V, 480V, including bus ducts, transformers and panels); water (process piping, chilled water); pneumatic compressed air; vacuum pump material piping supply and return; positive pressure air supply, return and filtration; magnehelix pressure sensors; thermolator temperature regulators; conveyor system for sprew regrind systems; water pressure and tempurature sensors; water leak detection systems and press mold maintenance crane.
