Principal in chargeCompleted: July 2009 The design for Utah Valley Universitys Noorda Theatre provided flexibility through innovation. The 45 foot high theater allows a myriad of options for audience, scene and stage layout. This new black box theatre, on the UVU Campus includes a flexible seating system that can be arranged with the actors in the center with seating on two, three or four sides or as a traditional proscenium. The main theatre has black walls, ceiling and floor. Spectators are much closer to the actors since there is no formal stage and plays can be set quickly.Instead of a traditional catwalk, the team designed a state-of-the-art walk-on ceiling grid made of woven stainless steel cables. It allows technicians to adjust lights rapidly and safely above the 17 foot high net. Langue AIASchematic design Utah State University commissioned Axis Architects to provide a preliminary design for fund raising purposes showing potential for a new business building. The program includes classrooms, computer labs, student interactive spaces, the business library, the Deans suite, faculty and staff offices, and the three pillars of the school, the Center for Entrepreneurship, Center for Global Management, and the Center for Ethical Leadership. The building was designed to interact with the original business building which is directly adjacent to this site. The atrium provides commanding views over the Wellsville Mountain Range, and will be able to be seen from all parts of Cache Valley. This design will occupy a prime location on the campus, and would serve as an entry element for the campus. The building provides an iconic and progressive image which mirrors the modern curriculum.

FeetCost: $8,500,000Estimated Completion: Fall 2009In an open competition, Axis Architects was selected unanimously by the jury to provide the design for Utah State Universitys world class Equine Education Center.This facility is part rural barn, and part high-tech higher education classroom. Axis architects celebrated this dichotomy by reinterpreting the classic barn form and utilizing a combination of traditional and manufactured materials. In its form, it elegantly describes the relationship of equine program with educational program, intersecting the two elements.A primary concern was health and safety, both for the horses and for the people who operate the program. The facility includes a 45,000 SF performance arena, 42 stalls, a breeding facility, classrooms and the administrative offices for the Department of Equine Education. In addition, it provides all of the support spaces, for a self- sufficient program removed from the main campus. These include all of the exterior amenities required on the 16 acre site.

Utah Schools for theDeaf and BlindLibbie Edwards SchoolSalt Lake City, Utah42,000 SF$1,800,000Completed: 2010After several previous programming and building analysis projects for the Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind, Axis Architects was selected as the architects for a two-part project for the school. The initial phase included a building evaluation and reprogramming of the USDB functions; the second phase involved the design and renovation of an existing school facility to accommodate the new program.The details of the project consisted of providing additional ramps at exterior access at four locations, upgrading the acoustics in the classrooms to address the specific needs of the students, remodeling toilet rooms to not only meet ADA requirements, but add additional wheelchair accessibility and upgrading the kitchen to meet the new requirements of a full-prep kitchen. The building was also modified to eliminate other impediments to the impaired children to enhance the educational experience. Axis also addressed fire and life safety issues, modified the mechanical and plumbing systems and performed a seismic retrofits. Other modifications included the elimination of hallway protrusions and upgraded acoustics and lighting controls.Axis Architects donated three pieces of installation artwork to the school, including two visually interactive murals and a sound wall which incorporates wood cavities and musical strings that can be manipulated by the students.

Langue AIA Completed: 2009Due to a large reorganization of their campus, Utah Valley University relocated several administrative functions.Working closely the directors of the departments and their personnel, Axis was able to provide unique solutions which promoted privacy while integrating the elements into a cohesive whole. This solution works in part because it capitalizes on and reinforces the successful qualities of the existing building while providing clarity to the arrangement and functioning of the inter-related operations.
